Restoring Raynor

Hole 6: Gate Lake

The Sixth Hole is a creation purely from the mind of Seth Raynor. Not following any of the “ideal hole” templates often employed by him, his mentor, Charles Blair McDonald or his protégé, Charles Banks, Gate Lake is rightly one of the most photographed holes at Mountain Lake.

2026 Restoration

Gate Lake will feature one of the largest and most striking green complexes. By moving the green over 20 yards to the right, strategy will be reintroduced here — either challenge the left side of the dogleg for more access to the front of the green, or play it safer to the right where access to the hole location comes with a much harsher angle. Distance control will be key for this large putting surface, which will nearly double in size.

Looking Back in Time for the Hundred Years Ahead.

The Mountain Lake golf course restoration presents an opportunity to not only preserve, restore, and improve upon Seth Raynor’s design, it also allows us to reaffirm our commitments to the principles of great golf course architecture, environmental stewardship and aesthetics. As we modernize to meet the evolving needs of the club, our primary goal remains to enhance enjoyment and playability for members.
